An anti-inflammatory drug, available only by prescription, is indicated to treat Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
IBD is a general term for any condition of chronic inflammation of the bowel wall with alternative periods of relapse and remission. The two main types of IBD are: Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn´s disease (CD). UC is a chronic inflammation of the colon wall and the rectum. Crohn´s disease may involve inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract anywhere from the mouth to the anus, but mainly in the ileocecal region (this is the region between the small intestine and the colon). The active substance is 5-aminosalicylic acid (abbreviated 5-ASA) known as mesalazine.
