Photodynamic therapy is a cancer treatment that uses a photosensitive drug called Photofrin®, in combination with a laser light delivery system. When injected intravenously, Photofrin® tends to be retained for a longer period of time by cancer cells than by most other tissues, thus minimizing any effect to normal tissue. Exposing the drug to light causes a chemical reaction which results in the destruction of cancer cells containing the drug. It is used in Esophageal, Bladder and Endobronchial Cancer as well as for Cholangiocarcinoma. |
